Useful information about the Deep Creek Lake area of Garrett County, MD:
Searching for the perfect location for a family vacation home? Your search can end here! Visitors will find the Deep Creek Lake resort area in western Maryland (Garrett County) offers many diverse activities including boating, skiing, golfing, state parks, water sports & fishing; as well as fine dining restaurants (go by boat!), shopping, entertainment, local concierge services, room to roam and privacy! No matter what your interest, Deep Creek Maryland has it all! Deep Creek is the largest freshwater lake in all of Maryland, one of only a handful of areas on the entire east coast of the United States offering four season resort activities with a ski slope. And it's a short, accessible drive from Baltimore MD, Pittsburgh PA, Washington DC, northern Virginia, Philadelphia - Pennsylvania, Morgantown WV and nearby West Virginia, Ohio, Delaware, New Jersey, New York & Kentucky. Our average temperature is 10-15 degrees cooler (72 degrees in summer) than most of these areas, as we are roughly 3,000 +/- feet above sea level. It rarely ever gets too hot, but the refreshing mountain breezes take care of that! Wisp Ski & Golf Resort is also located in Garrett County & McHenry, MD (the northern mountainous region of Deep Creek Lake). The northern part of the lake is by far the most commercialized, and is where you will find most of the restaurants, shops and gas/grocery convenience stores. The southern shores of the lake are much more private, with larger tracts of acreage, fewer mountains and more trees, pasture land and working farms. The entire lake is surrounded by a conservational easement, or 'buffer strip', that is managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, DNR. DNR (located at the DCL State Park) regulates certain practices or activities that are allowed on the buffer strip (with special permits), such as building a fire pit, or a permanent structure and also offers a boaters safety course and environmental info about the ecosystem of DeepCreek Lake. Deep Creek Lake has an interesting history involving Native American hunting tribes, civil war sites nearby, the construction of the Deep Creek Dam & hydro electric plant, small coal mining towns, the rich heritage of Route 40 'The National Pike', the Casselman River bridge, the origins of the Potomac River, the historic western Maryland Scenic railroad and additional fascinating stories. There are countless national newspaper stories, magazine articles & TV shows detailing the history and beauty of 'Mountain Maryland' and how the times have changed, but you really must experience all that our resort area has to offer in person!
Truly a 4 season resort - Look north, west, east or south - there are a variety of outdoor activities ANY time of year within a few miles:

Fall brings: Cooler weather, Community events & cookouts, artisan craft / home made goods / antique shows, Autumn Glory Festival, hunting, notice the variety of bright color in our leaves, catch a show at 'Our Town Theatre' in Oakland,

Real estate opportunities are plentiful, ranging from a home with views of the water, rivers or mountains, lakefront homes with many bedrooms for large families or groups, lakeside cottages for couples, waterfront condos or a ski-in/ski-out townhouse at Wisp, lake access chalets, or even a 'cabin in the woods'. Many properties offer a personal dock slip or multiple boat docks, and marinas offer other conveniences such as dry storage & rental boats. You will find many other unique forms of property ownership to fit your style and needs. Many people dream of retiring to the Deep Creek Lake & Garrett County area, and prefer building sites or lots, farms & acreage, or just a large tract of land covered with native oak, maple & pine trees. I consider myself one of the lucky few who live in this special area year-round - and yes, there are plenty of residential & single family home opportunities here, as well! Begin your vacation home search today - there are still great lakefront & slope-front properties left, as well as commercial space! E-mail me for more information on residential housing and single family home ownership in the following areas: Deep Creek Lake, Garrett County, Oakland, Swanton, McHenry, Grantsville, Friendsville & Accident, Maryland.
